The fairytale castle By ludWig II

Neuschwanstein Castle is much more than just a tourist attraction, it is a journey into the heart of the romantic imagination, a place where dreams take shape and reality seems to fade into the contours of a fairy tale This castle, with its sharp towers that stand out against the sky and its majestic halls, seems to have been born from the pen of a poet or the brush of a painter, rather than from the work of bricklayers and stonemasons.

Visiting it means immersing yourself in a world of beauty and fantasy, where every stone tells a story and every room is a chapter of an enchanted tale… It means walking the corridors that King Ludwig II walked in his dreams, admiring the works of art that adorn the walls and listening to the echoes of Wagner’s melodies that still resonate in the halls.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a place of refuge, a place where time seems to stop and the frenzy of the modern world dissolves in the quiet of the ancient rooms. It is a place of inspiration, where the beauty of the architecture and the grandeur of the surrounding landscape can awaken creativity and imagination.

But above all, Neuschwanstein Castle is a place of love. A king’s love for music and art, love for ancient legends and stories of knights and princesses, love for beauty and harmony. It is a place where you can experience the power of love and its ability to create wonders.

Visit Neuschwanstein Castle, and be enchanted by its beauty, history and charm. Because there is nothing more romantic than a fairytale castle, where dreams come true and love is the creator of every wonder.

what to see
Each room of Neuschwanstein Castle has its own charm

Neuschwanstein Castle is a tribute to Lohengrin, the Swan Knight, a medieval German legend. When completed, the castle had 200 rooms, including servants’ and guests’ quarters. The sovereign’s rooms were arranged on three floors, while the fourth was entirely occupied by the Singers’ Hall. Among the most majestic rooms are the Bedroom of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the Throne Room, and the Singers’ Hall. The Throne Room is located in the west wing of the building, occupying the third floor and part of the fourth. Inside there is the legendary throne of King Ludwig, which made this room reminiscent of a church in its shape, with scenes depicting the events of Jesus and the 12 apostles.

The history of Neuschwanstein Castle

it began long before 1869, the year the foundation stone was laid. The future King Ludwig II spent long periods at Hohenschwangau Castle, built by his father Maximillian II of Bavaria in 1832. Here the young Ludwig II fell in love with the wild and romantic landscape of the Bavarian forests, identifying it as the ideal place to build his fairytale castle. The design of the castle was entrusted to architect Eduard Riedel, who took inspiration from the works of Richard Wagner and ancient German legends to create a one-of-a-kind building. Ludwig II never saw the completion of his castle, as he died under mysterious circumstances in 1886, a year before the building’s completion. Despite this, his dream of creating a place of beauty and enchantment was realized, and today Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most visited places in Germany and a symbol of Bavaria.

„I want to remain an eternal enigma, for myself and for others.“

Neuschwanstein Castle is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00.

To reach Neuschwanstein Castle there are several options:

By car: The castle can be reached from Munich by car in about an hour and a half. There is no parking outside the castle: the last parking option is the town of Hohenschwangau.

By public transport: If you prefer to use public transport, you can take the train to Füssen and from there the bus to the castle ticket office.

Guided tour: Another way to reach the castle is to take a day tour from Munich.

Once you arrive at the ticket offices, the easiest way to go up to the castle is to walk (about 1.5km with steep sections). The shuttle bus and horse-drawn carriages do not reach the Castle directly: from the point where they drop you off you will have to walk about 300 meters uphill or 600 meters downhill, on a route not suitable for those with walking difficulties.

Visitors with a wheelchair or walker must book the guided tour in advance to be able to use an elevator. It is advisable to book well in advance.

Neuschwanstein Castle is fascinating at any time of the year, but there are some periods that could be considered the best for a visit:

Spring (April-June): Spring is a wonderful time to visit the castle. The climate is mild, the flowers are in bloom and the surrounding landscape is green and lush. Plus, being outside the peak tourist season, you may find it less crowded.

Summer (July-August): Summer is the most popular season to visit the castle, thanks to the warm and sunny climate. However, it can be very crowded, so it is advisable to book tickets in advance.

Autumn (September-October): Autumn offers a spectacular landscape, with the leaves changing color and creating a fascinating contrast with the castle. Even in this period, the climate is generally mild and pleasant.

Winter (November-March): The castle during winter is a postcard picture, with snow covering the roofs and towers. However, the weather can be very cold and some parts of the castle may be closed due to weather conditions.

In general, the best time to visit Neuschwanstein Castle depends on your personal preferences in terms of climate, crowding and landscape.

Yes, you can also visit Hohenschwangau Castle, located in the vicinity of Neuschwanstein Castle. This smaller but equally fascinating castle was the summer residence of the royal family and the place where King Ludwig II spent much of his childhood and summers. Hohenschwangau Castle is rich in history and offers a lived-in atmosphere and original period furnishings. It is possible to purchase a combined ticket that allows you to visit both castles, a perfect solution for a day trip. The castle is open every day from 09:00 to 16:00.
