In the heart of Neuschwanstein Castle, between the Hall and the Study, there is a room that seems to have come straight out of a fairy tale: an artificial cave.

This unusual space, created by set designer August Dirigl, is a true masterpiece of design and engineering.

The cave was made with artificial stalactites and stalagmites, creating a unique and mysterious atmosphere. Originally, the cave was illuminated with colored lights and also had a waterfall, adding a touch of magic to the environment. This room was designed to evoke the Hörselberg mountain, a key location in the Tannhäuser saga, a work much loved by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the castle’s commissioner.

From the cave, you pass to the Winter Garden through a sliding glass door, set in the “rock”. The large windows offer a spectacular view of the surrounding Alpine panorama. The fountain in this room was initially conceived for the Moorish room, never built, on the second floor of the castle.
