KING LUDWIG II OF BAVARIA

History
WHO WAS KING LUDWIG II OF BAVARIA

Ludwig II of Bavaria, also known as the “Fable King”, is a fascinating and complex historical figure. Born on August 25, 1845 in Nymphenburg Castle, Ludwig II ascended the throne at a very young age, at the age of 18, in 1864. From his childhood, Ludwig II showed a strong interest in art, a tendency towards isolation, a fervent imagination and a propensity for prodigality.

During his reign, Ludwig II built some of Bavaria’s most beautiful and iconic castles, including Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and a hunting lodge on the Schachen Alp. These castles, with their extraordinary architecture and luxurious interiors, reflect Ludwig’s passion for art, oriental luxury and his admiration for Louis XIV of France, the Sun King.

Neuschwanstein Castle, for example, is an architectural masterpiece that inspired Walt Disney and which today is one of the symbols of Germany. Ludwig II also had a strong connection with the composer Richard Wagner, whom he hosted and supported financially during his reign.

However, Ludwig II’s life was also marked by controversy and mystery. His engagement to Princess Sophie in Bayern ended a month before the wedding and only recently, with the publication of his secret diaries, was his homosexuality confirmed. Furthermore, Ludwig II was declared insane by a medical commission that never examined him and deposed from the throne. He died under mysterious circumstances in Lake Starnberg in 1886, and the circumstances of his death are still the subject of debate and speculation today.

Despite his troubled life, Ludwig II left an indelible mark on Bavaria and its history. His castles continue to attract millions of visitors each year, and his life and reign have been the subject of numerous books, musicals and films, including Italian director Luchino Visconti’s famous “Ludwig.”
